Tióhrhano Diabo’s journey to reclaim his ancestral language has been nothing short of transformative. Two years ago, he struggled to pronounce the name given to him by his grandmother. However, through the Kanien’kéha Ratiwennahní:rats Adult Immersion Program, he has made tremendous strides in learning Kanien’kéha, the language of his ancestors. Diabo recently graduated from the program, expressing his excitement about dreaming in the language that holds the old ways of thinking and cultural heritage.
The culmination of this linguistic revival is the upcoming establishment of the Kahnawake Cultural Arts Center (KCAC) as a permanent home for the Kanien’kéha language and culture. The KCAC will not only house the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center but also feature a cutting-edge museum and Turtle Island Theatre. With Kahnawake Tourism as a key partner, the KCAC is set to open its doors to the public in spring 2026.
The fundraising efforts for this ambitious $56 million project have been remarkable, with $51 million already secured. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, organizers have kept the project on track and on budget. As the final phase of the Capital Campaign kicks off, community members are encouraged to contribute to ensure shared ownership and sustainability for future generations.
The vision behind the KCAC extends beyond preserving language and culture. It aims to showcase the rich heritage of the Kanien’kehá:ka people, including their contributions to society, such as the sport of lacrosse. The center will not only serve as a cultural hub but also provide a space for young artists to hone their skills and showcase their talent.
The community’s involvement in the project is evident, with local contractors and workers playing a significant role in bringing the KCAC to life. As the construction progresses, the anticipation for the center’s completion grows, marking a significant milestone in the revitalization of Kanien’kehá:ka culture.
