Day 5 of STM strike: Montreal public transit users face ongoing disruptions

Montreal’s transit system remains disrupted on the fifth day of a rotating strike by nearly 2,400 STM maintenance workers.

Service is limited to three short windows on strike days—mornings from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., afternoons from 2:45 to 5:45 p.m., and late nights from 11 p.m. to closing—forcing many commuters to adjust their routines or seek costly alternatives.

This is the second strike by unionized maintenance workers. This one started Sept. 22. It’s been more than a year of stalled negotiations over wages, subcontracting, and workplace conditions.

Over the weekend, union representatives presented a counter-proposal addressing several non-monetary demands, but the STM rejected the offer, citing major operational and financial concerns and made their own counter-offer.

On Monday, Union leaders criticized the transit agency for being “inflexible,” while STM said the proposal lacked progress and would have imposed significant budget setbacks.

The provincial mediator’s mandate expired Tuesday and both sides are under pressure to find common ground as frustration grows among Montrealers relying on public transit.
