“Jean-François Roberge Sounds Alarm on Radical Islamism, Urges Vigilance”

The day after Québec Premier François Legault raised concerns about the threat of radical Islamism, Minister of Secularism Jean-François Roberge urged the public to be vigilant against this growing issue. During a press conference, Roberge highlighted the case of Bedford School in Montreal where teachers were found to have infiltrated the institution, showcasing the need for immediate action.

Roberge emphasized the importance of recognizing and addressing signs of radical Islamism early on, citing instances such as the segregation of genders, religious practices in classrooms, and the influence of religious organizations in educational settings. He also referenced preacher Adil Charkaoui’s call for Montreal students to join jihad as a disturbing example of radicalization that cannot be ignored.

As opposition parties sought clarification on the government’s stance, concerns were raised about the terminology used by Premier Legault to describe the issue. While Liberal Party House Leader Marwah Rizqy pressed for clearer definitions, Québec solidaire called for a broader condemnation of all forms of radicalism, including masculinism.

Parti Québécois acknowledged the presence of radical Islamism but criticized the premier’s language, urging for a more nuanced approach to the issue. MNA Joël Arseneau emphasized the importance of accurately identifying and addressing Islamist entryism, stressing the need for constructive dialogue and policy development to promote coexistence and equal opportunities in Quebec.
