Nooran Rezayi: Lafrenière Keeps Options Open for Potential Public Inquiry

The Quebec government is considering a public inquiry into the tragic death of 15-year-old Nooran Rezayi, who was fatally shot by police in Longueuil on September 21. Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière mentioned the potential for a coroner’s inquest during Question Period, emphasizing that this step would come after ongoing investigations by the Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes (BEI) and the Montreal police (SPVM) reach their conclusions. Québec solidaire (QS) MNA Andrés Fontecilla has called for transparency in the investigations, questioning the BEI’s openness.

QS has put forward a motion urging the government to ensure full transparency in the investigations surrounding Rezayi’s death, emphasizing the importance of restoring public trust, recognizing the positive contributions of young people from racialized communities, condemning hate speech on social media, and combating the stigmatization of Quebec youth. The motion also calls for a moment of silence in memory of Nooran Rezayi.
