An early morning fire at a city-managed affordable housing complex on Dovercourt Road has left a man in critical condition.
Toronto emergency responders received a call just before 4 a.m. on Friday reporting a fire at 321 Dovercourt Road, located near Dundas Street West and Ossington Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a fire in a second-floor unit of the three-story building, which was swiftly contained by the internal sprinkler system.
Rescuers found the injured man in the second-floor hallway and promptly transported him to the hospital with severe injuries. The fire has been extinguished, but emergency crews remained at the scene throughout the morning. Several residents chose to shelter in place during the incident.
Authorities are set to investigate the cause of the fire later today. The property, managed by the City of Toronto, serves as a modular housing site that commenced operations in January 2021.
