“FRAPRU Mobilizes Against Quebec’s Failing Housing Policies, Demands Immediate Action on Crisis”

On Saturday, a march organized by the Front d’action populaire en réaménagement urbain (FRAPRU) will take place on Nun’s Island in Verdun, addressing the housing crisis and calling out the Quebec government for being out of touch with the situation.

FRAPRU is deeply concerned about the rising rents, limited housing options beyond the private market, and the increasing homelessness, which they see as clear indicators of the government’s lack of effective action.

Moreover, the group is highlighting the shortcomings of Quebec’s housing strategy, criticizing its lack of specific targets for social housing development in the upcoming years. They stress that the costs of the crisis, both social and economic, far outweigh the investments required to create more affordable housing.

Advocates are pushing for the government to allocate funds for new social housing units and establish programs to safeguard tenants’ rights.

The demonstration will kick off at 1:00 p.m. at Parc Dan-Hanganu (Parc Elgar) with speeches from various organizations representing labor, women, and communities, including the Confédération des syndicats nationaux (CSN), L’R des centres de femmes, and the Regroupement des auberges du cœur du Québec.

Participants will then march across Nun’s Island, making stops at sites associated with the “financialization of housing” in the region.

The event is scheduled to conclude by 3:30 p.m. with a final address by FRAPRU spokesperson Véronique Laflamme.
