SIU Exonerates York Police Officers: No Charges in Teen’s Arrest Following Carjacking Incident

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has concluded that York Regional Police officers are cleared of any misconduct in the arrest of a 17-year-old boy following a carjacking incident in Thornhill.

The event unfolded late at night on June 13, when York Region police responded to a call about a carjacking at a plaza in the Highway 7 East and Times Avenue area. According to investigators, two men brandishing a firearm confronted three individuals entering a vehicle and demanded the keys.

Thanks to the assistance of the Air Support Unit, authorities were able to track down both vehicles. Following a brief chase, the suspects abandoned their car and fled on foot upon reaching Lynnbrook Drive in Toronto.

During the arrest, the 17-year-old was apprehended by officers and later found to have suffered a broken jaw.

SIU Director Joseph Martino has affirmed that the use of force was deemed appropriate given the situation. The investigation has since been concluded by the SIU, an independent governmental body tasked with scrutinizing police behavior in incidents involving death, severe injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of firearms.
