Members of the Montreal Alouettes swapped their playbooks for serving trays on Monday evening, joining community volunteers to serve Thanksgiving dinner at Welcome Hall Mission’s Macaulay Emergency Shelter. This heartwarming event has become a cherished tradition since 2004, initiated by former Alouettes quarterback and current quarterbacks coach Anthony Calvillo, who continued to lead the effort this year.
Calvillo emphasized the importance of giving back, highlighting the role of Welcome Hall Mission in supporting those in need on a daily basis. The evening saw multiple servings of hot turkey meals provided to thousands of individuals in Montreal facing homelessness and food insecurity.
Welcome Hall Mission’s President, Sam Watts, described the shelter as a crucial stop on the journey toward securing permanent housing for its guests. Alongside Alouettes players, members of Vanier College’s Division 1 football team also lent a hand in serving meals, emphasizing the value of volunteering and community support.
For the players, being able to contribute after a game was a commitment they embraced wholeheartedly, showcasing their dedication to their community. Quarterback Davis Alexander even had his mother, Natalie, join in the volunteer efforts, highlighting the significance of giving back and making a positive impact.
Reflecting on the day, Natalie Alexander expressed her joy in participating, emphasizing the importance of bringing hope and encouragement to those in need. The Alouettes players, like receiver Austin Mack, echoed the sentiment of gratitude and the privilege of being able to give back to the community.
The impact of the Thanksgiving dinner service was palpable among the guests, like Denis Bergeron, who appreciated the morale boost and the sense of care extended to them. Bergeron’s message of caution served as a reminder that anyone can face challenges, emphasizing the importance of empathy and support for those in need.
As the evening came to a close, the lasting message resonated: a simple gesture of providing a warm meal and a sense of belonging can make a significant difference in people’s lives, fostering a stronger sense of community and compassion.
