The Toronto Blue Jays have secured stability at the top of their front office for the long term, with Mark Shapiro signing a five-year contract extension to continue as president and CEO.
This agreement, announced by Rogers Communications, means Shapiro will lead the team through 2030, ensuring a potential 15-year tenure as the head of Canada’s only Major League Baseball (MLB) franchise.
Edward Rogers, Chair of the Toronto Blue Jays and Executive Chair of Rogers Communications, praised Shapiro’s leadership, stating, “Mark’s exceptional leadership has been a driving force behind the Blue Jays’ success, and we’re thrilled he will continue to guide our team and build on their incredible momentum. As proud owner of Canada’s team, we are excited to work with Mark and his team to provide them with the tools and resources needed to bring World Series championships back to Canada.”
Under Shapiro’s guidance, major renovations have been undertaken at Rogers Centre, a project spanning multiple phases and costing nearly $400 million. The 35-year-old stadium has been modernized with updated seating, enhanced fan experiences, and improved player facilities. Additionally, Shapiro led the transformation of the Blue Jays’ spring training complex in Dunedin, Fla.
Reflecting on his tenure, Shapiro expressed gratitude, saying, “The opportunity to lead the Blue Jays organization for the past 10 years has been incredibly fulfilling. Together, we have built an organization with people who care deeply about baseball and take immense pride in being Canada’s team. I am grateful and honoured to be able to continue that work.”
Shapiro’s leadership bore fruit in 2025 as the Blue Jays clinched their first American League pennant since 1993, reaching the World Series for the first time in over three decades. Although Toronto came up just short of a championship against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 7, the season unified the country behind the team.
Looking ahead, Shapiro emphasized the organization’s commitment to bringing more championships to Canada, stating, “Watching our country unite behind our team this past season has inspired and energized us to continue a relentless pursuit in bringing World Series championships back to Canada, and with the support of Edward, Tony [Staffieri], and Rogers, we’re committed to providing our fans a championship-calibre team and a best-in-class fan experience.”
Shapiro, who joined the Blue Jays in 2015 after a successful stint with the Cleveland Guardians (formerly Indians), has been instrumental in shaping the team’s direction. He brought in current general manager Ross Atkins, who continues to serve in his role.
The Blue Jays have been active this offseason, with right-hander Shane Bieber choosing to stay for the final year of his contract, and the team securing free-agent agreements with starting pitchers Dylan Cease and Cody Ponce.
