A 36-year-old man has been charged with manslaughter in connection with the death of a woman in downtown Montreal on Wednesday.
Alexandre Karim Amau Restau was charged on Thursday afternoon with Hiba Elrhazi’s death.
Police say the pair lived at the same address, where the victim was found shot.
If proven this could be the ninth femicide in Quebec the year and the seventh homicide on the island so far in 2026.
Montreal Police (SPVM) were called to a condo building on Simpson Street near Somerhill Terrace around 3:25 p.m. on Wednesday, following a well-being check requested by the Sûreté du Québec (SQ).
The man had been taken into custody at the Montreal airport by SQ officers when they reached out to SPVM.
When SPVM arrived at the condo, they found Elrhazi, in her 20s, with injuries to her upper body. Despite attempts to revive her, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
