“Transformation Begins: Historic Saint-Henri Industrial Site Undergoes Major Demolition”

Demolition Underway for Historic Canada Malting Plant in Montreal
The iconic Canada Malting plant in Montreal’s Saint-Henri neighborhood is currently undergoing partial demolition, with work commencing on Monday and expected to conclude by Friday. As of Thursday morning, a portion of the building’s side facade has already been taken down.

The decision to demolish stems from an engineering report commissioned by the site’s developer, La Malterie Inc., which identified the structure as being at immediate risk of collapse. For safety reasons, the public is urged to steer clear of the area, respecting all safety barriers and signage in place. Restrictions persist on Saint-Ambroise Street until safety experts give the all-clear.

In place of the historic plant, the developer intends to construct 685 new housing units, allocating 20 percent for social housing. The redevelopment plans also encompass green spaces, a grocery store, and a pharmacy, with a commitment to preserving the distinctive pink house atop the building.
