5 ill-equipped hikers rescued from Garibaldi Lake on Saturday night

The North Shore Rescue (NSR) responded on Saturday night to a group of five stranded hikers attempting to hike up Mount Garibaldi.

With the help of night vision goggles, the NSR’s helicopter team was able to locate the hikers and landed at Garibaldi Lake.

In a written statement, NSR says that the hikers were “very inexperienced and unprepared” and “surprised by the amount of snow they encountered.”

“Due to this, they became unable to continue.”

According to images rescuers shared on social media, the hikers were wearing shorts and did not carry sufficient gear with them.

The hikers were later flown to Squamish Airport.

NSR reminds hikers to research their intended destination ahead of time.

“Ensure you have adequate training for what you have chosen, and carry proper gear, including the 10 Essentials,” the NSR added.
