Vancouver teacher taking shots with students loses certificate for one day

A teacher in Vancouver has been reprimanded after drinking alcohol with two students.

The BC Commissioner for Teacher Regulation (BCCTR) says that two Grade 12 students showed up at the teacher’s house on June 9, 2023, with a bottle of vodka and asked her to participate in a “challenge.”

The commissioner’s report states that the teacher and at least one student drank a shot of the liquor each.

Even though the teacher suspected that the underage students were already drunk when they arrived at her house, she did not make any attempts to contact the students’ parents or police.

The teacher, Jacqueline Sheppet, was suspended for one day for failing to “role model appropriate behaviour or provide for the safety of students.”

This marks the teacher’s second suspension, as she had been punished with five days of suspension due to another incident in 2023.

In April and June of that year, Sheppet caused two other students to start crying after they asked to either leave class early or reschedule an exam.

In addition to the suspension, she will also complete a course at the Justice Institute of British Columbia.
