Armed man arrested after stabbing in New Westminster, police say

The New Westminster Police Department says it has arrested an armed man after a woman was stabbed near a SkyTrain station Wednesday.

Officers were called to New Westminster SkyTrain Station around 11 p.m. after a report of a woman being slashed with a knife.

“The caller shared that two men were fleeing the scene, and they provided descriptions of the suspects,” police said.

When officers arrived, they found the woman, who was suffering from a laceration at the top of her head.

Minutes later, they found two men matching the suspects’ descriptions on Columbia Street.

“When officers called out to the men, they split up and ran in different directions,” the New West PD said.

“After two foot pursuits, the suspects quickly found themselves in police custody.”

One of the suspects had a loaded handgun, drugs, and several thousand dollars’ worth of counterfeit money.

The woman was taken to hospital.

Police say it isn’t clear what relationship, if any, exists between the woman and the suspect.

Hailey Finnigan with the New West PD tells CityNews police are recommending charges against both subjects: one charge of possession of a firearm for one of the men, who remains in custody, and one charge of assault causing bodily harm for the other man, who has been released.
