A 36-year-old driver is facing significant penalties after allegedly speeding on the Highway 40 over the weekend.
According to the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), officers from Montreal highway patrol intercepted the vehicle heading east on Highway 40 at 160 km/h after taking the Côte-Vertu Boulevard exit at around 1 a.m. May 9. The speed limit is in the zone is 50 km/h.
“When the police officers tried to stop him, the driver sped up and continued on his way, committing further violations of the Highway Safety Code,” police said.
The driver was issued multiple tickets, including a $2,068 fine and a total of 32 demerit points for excessive speeding, driving between midnight and 5 a.m. on a learner’s permit and for driving in a zigzag and violation of traffic code.
Police say the driver’s licence was suspended for 7 days.
Authorities are reminding the public that excessive speed remains one of the leading causes of fatal collisions on Quebec roads.
