Overnight police chase in Laval ends with car crashing into Charles-Perrault elementary school; only driver injured

An 18-year-old driver suffered serious injuries after allegedly fleeing police and crashing into an elementary school in Laval early Thursday morning.

According to the Laval Police (SPL), officers attempted to stop a vehicle travelling eastbound on Boulevard de la Concorde East at around 3:25 a.m. for an alleged Highway Safety Code violation.

Police say the driver failed to stop and instead accelerated away. A short distance later, the vehicle reportedly lost control, rolled over several times and crashed into the main building of Charles-Perrault elementary school.

The driver, who was alone in the vehicle, was transported to hospital. While his life was initially feared, police later said doctors determined he was out of danger.

No other injuries were reported. The crash occurred overnight while the school was unoccupied.

A security perimeter was established around the school, which remained closed Thursday. School administrators announced the closure in a brief message posted to Facebook, citing “exceptional circumstances.”

Collision reconstruction specialists were expected to examine the scene as investigators work to determine the exact circumstances of the crash and what charges, if any, may be laid against the young driver.

The investigation remains ongoing.
