A former well-known figure in the Sûreté du Québec (SQ), Guy Lapointe, wishes to represent the Parti Québécois (PQ) in the general elections next October.
Lapointe announced on Monday alongside the PQ leader, Paul St-Pierre Plamondon, that he will be a candidate for the party’s nomination in the Verchères riding, located in Montérégie.
The police officer by training worked for the Sûreté du Québec (SQ) for just over 28 years, according to his LinkedIn profile. During his final years of service with the force, he served as chief inspector and director of communications, often acting as the SQ’s spokesperson to the media.
Since October 2023, Lapointe has been the head of communications in the office of the director of the Fire Safety Service of the City of Montreal.
“If he is entering politics today, it is to serve the people of Verchères and the generations who will build the Quebec of tomorrow. An independent Quebec, free to make its own choices,” the PQ stated on social media.
“Our leader considers his candidacy for the nomination as an important asset to help a future Parti Québécois government restore the sense of security of citizens,” the political party added.
The current MNA for Verchères is CAQ member Suzanne Roy, who confirmed last fall that she will not be a candidate in the 2026 elections.
In the 2022 elections, the Coalition Avenir Québec won the riding with more than half of the votes (51 per cent), while the PQ finished second with nearly 21 per cent of the votes.
