Two years ago, Zackary was recovering from spinal surgery.
Today, the 10-year-old is riding BMX bikes and serving as the face of one of Quebec’s longest-running charitable cycling events.
Zackary, who was born with cerebral palsy, became the spokeschild for the 35th annual Pedal for Kids fundraiser on Friday, sharing a story organizers say demonstrates the impact of care provided at The Montreal Children’s Hospital.
The surgery he underwent at the hospital two years ago improved his mobility and helped him pursue a goal he once thought was out of reach: learning to ride a bike.
That goal quickly turned into a passion.
Now an avid BMX rider, Zackary joined supporters, volunteers and hospital advocates at the annual fundraiser, which has raised more than $15 million since its launch to support young patients and their families.
This year’s event focused on raising money for The Children’s Dentistry Clinic, the largest pediatric dental facility of its kind in Canada.
Organizers say Zackary’s journey reflects the purpose behind the fundraiser, connecting donors directly to the children whose lives are changed through specialized pediatric care.
The event also marked a milestone anniversary. Celebrating its 35th year, Pedal for Kids drew participants through downtown Montreal aboard the event’s signature 30-seat Mighty Bike while highlighting the stories of patients who have benefited from treatment at The Children’s.
For Zackary and his family, the day was an opportunity to celebrate how far he has come since his surgery and to help ensure other children receive the same chance to pursue their own dreams.
