Serious crash outside Mission results in one fatality

On Sunday, a serious crash happened on Lougheed Highway, east of Mission.

Mission RCMP were called to Lougheed Highway and Sylvester Road in Hatzic around 1:30 p.m. after two vehicles collided.

A Toyota Tundra pulling an ATV was travelling westbound on Lougheed Highway when a Toyota Camry turned left in front it of it. The Tundra ended up hitting the Camry.

CCTV footage from a close by gas station showed that the Camry started to turn left onto Sylvester Road but turned too soon, turning into the yield lane for traffic coming off of Sylvester Road.

The Camry did not clear the lane in time and was struck by the Tundra travelling straight though the highway.

The people in the Tundra were not seriously injured but the front female passenger in the Camry, a 56-year-old woman from Surrey, died at the scene.

A 48-year-old woman from Surrey, who had been in the rear seat, was taken to hospital in critical condition.  The 59-year-old male driver of the Camry, also from Surrey, was not seriously injured.

Three ambulances with primary care paramedics, an ambulance with advanced care paramedics, an advanced care paramedic response unit, and a paramedic supervisor attended the scene.

“One patient was transported to hospital in critical condition. Three patients were transported to hospital in stable condition,” said Brian Twaites, BCEHS paramedic public information officer.

A witness stated that that none of the passengers in the Camry were wearing seat belts.

The Integrated Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Service examined the crash scene and the investigation is ongoing.
