The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) says it has been called in after a man died while in Vancouver Police Department (VPD) custody.
The IIO — the province’s independent police watchdog agency — says the death occurred Monday morning at a VPD jail.
The man had been arrested and lodged in the jail Sunday afternoon, the IIO says.
At approximately 8 a.m. the next morning, staff found him unresponsive.
“Medical personnel provided aid, but the man was pronounced deceased at the scene,” the IIO said.
The VPD says the man is not being identified.
The IIO is called in after any police-related incidents that result in death or serious injury, whether or not there are any allegations of wrongdoing.
