Police watchdog investigating in-custody event in Pitt Meadows

The Independent Investigations Office of BC (IIO) is investigating injuries sustained by a man while in the custody of Pitt Meadows RCMP.

On May 29, a man was arrested for theft. Once he was identified by police, he was found to be in violation of a court release order condition.

He was then transported to the Pitt Meadows RCMP detachment and put into a jail cell.

Once in the jail cell, the man started behaving in a way that had officers temporarily restrain him. Police re-entered the cell later because of safety concerns.

An interaction occurred between the man and the officers who entered his jail cell.

The man complained of an injury and was taken to the hospital by ambulance for assessment and treatment.

Pitt Meadows RCMP notified the IIO the following day and started an investigation.

The IIO asks that any witnesses who have information about this incident to please contact the IIO at our Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477.
