Switzerland to face Ghana or Columbia at BC Place in Round of 16

For the first time since 1938, Switzerland has won a match in the knockout round at the Men’s World Cup — and they did it right here in Vancouver, after they beat Algeria 2-nil in the Round of 32.

Tens of thousands of fans filled BC Place, and Swiss supporters are going home happy after their first knockout stage win in 88 years and the fact that they get to stay right here in Vancouver for their next match.

“Pure ecstasy, pure joy, we’re loving it,” one elated fan told CityNews.

“Let’s keep it going.”

“Look at the ambience. What a game. Amazing night, what a special night,” another shared.

“Switzerland played amazing, as we expected. So yeah, on to the next one.”

With that historic win for Switzerland, they’re moving on to the Round of 16 to face off against either Ghana or Colombia right back here at BC Place on July 7 — which will be the final World Cup match hosted by Vancouver.
