Côte-des-Neiges—NDG releases plans for housing project at Montreal’s former Hippodrome site

The borough of Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce has released its plans for a major housing development and sports centre at the Hippodrome site.

In a press release Wednesday, the borough said it is launching the authorization process to transform the former Blue Bonnets racetrack site along the Décarie Boulevard into 1,225 rental units in four towers, including some units under the affordable category.

More than a third of the site would be set aside for green spaces.

The 50,000 sq. foot-sports complex would feature a running track, a double gym, a training room and other community spaces.

Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce Mayor Stephanie Valenzuela, said the project would create a “complete neighbourhood” for families.

“In addition to delivering more than 1,200 new housing units, it will provide residents with their first major community facility—a modern, accessible sports and recreation center that is integrated into the neighborhood,” Valenzuela said.

A part of the funding for the project would come from the City of Montreal which has earmarked $50 million in its 10-year plan.

“This new facility is the first in a series of community amenities to come to the area and will help meet the needs of residents as the neighborhood continues to grow,” said Sonny Moroz, city councillor for Snowdon.

The Namur-Hippodrome neighbourhood development is considered to be one of the largest in the city with up to 20,000 housing units and 14 hectares of green and public spaces planned.
