The Quartier des arts du cirque (QUAC) has revealed an exciting plan for the transformation of the Saint-Michel area in collaboration with the City of Montreal and the Government of Quebec. This initiative is a significant part of the Quebec government’s Eastern Development Plan, aiming to turn the region into a vibrant cultural, creative, and tourist hotspot where art plays a pivotal role in driving social, economic, and environmental changes.
According to QUAC director general Charles-Mathieu Brunelle, the vision for Saint-Michel goes beyond just urban development. It is about creating spaces where residents can learn, innovate, establish businesses, reside, and connect with one another. Brunelle envisions Saint-Michel evolving into a top-tier cultural destination while preserving its strong community ties.
During the recent unveiling event, QUAC announced a major private investment by Groupe HD, injecting $150 million into the construction of 380 housing units on Jarry Street East. Co-president of Groupe HD, Jean-Philippe Hébert, expressed confidence in QUAC’s ambitious plan, emphasizing the importance of integrating housing, culture, public spaces, and community initiatives in urban development.
Furthermore, the QUAC introduced the latest phase of Galerie LA 40 under the Metropolitain, showcasing 20 new murals by 11 Montreal artists alongside 100 collaborative artworks by local youth and community organizations. The goal is to enhance the area with more residential options and green spaces, fostering a sense of community and creativity.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada stressed the need for comprehensive planning beyond the immediate vicinity to ensure a balanced environment where people can both live and work in Saint-Michel. By placing artists and art at the forefront of this development, Ferrada believes in engaging the entire community in the transformation process.
