The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) is currently conducting an investigation following the discovery of a suspicious object that prompted 911 calls suggesting it could be an explosive device on Thursday afternoon.
According to police reports, the incident took place at the intersection of Ash Street and 3rd Avenue at approximately 4 p.m.
Upon receiving the reports, officers swiftly responded to the scene, cordoned off the 300 block of Ash Street, and restricted all traffic in the area for safety measures, as stated by the NWPD.
Collaborating with the BC RCMP Explosives Disposal Unit, the NWPD carefully moved the object to a secure location. The operation lasted for about three hours with officers present in the vicinity during the process.
As a precautionary measure, some residents from a nearby apartment building were evacuated to ensure their safety.
Sgt. Andrew Leaver expressed gratitude towards residents for their cooperation during the incident, emphasizing the importance of treating every potential threat seriously until proven otherwise.
