Investigation Launched as Air Canada Jet Skids Off Runway in Montreal, Sparking Safety Concerns

Federal authorities and Air Canada are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a recent incident at Montréal-Trudeau Airport, where Flight AC774 from Los Angeles veered off the runway after landing on Thursday afternoon. Despite the unexpected turn of events, all 156 passengers and six crew members safely disembarked the aircraft.

In an exclusive interview with CityNews, John Gradek, an aviation expert and lecturer at McGill University, shed light on the incident and what scrutiny lies ahead for the airline and the Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB).

When questioned about the potential factors leading to a runway excursion, Gradek emphasized the lack of concrete information available from the landing footage. He noted that the landing initially appeared routine before the plane unexpectedly veered off course. The investigation will aim to uncover the specific circumstances within the aircraft that prompted this deviation from the runway.

The TSB investigators will concentrate on analyzing the cockpit voice and data recorders, examining the mechanical condition of the aircraft, and scrutinizing the actions of the pilots both audibly and in terms of cockpit activity. Gradek anticipates an initial report from the TSB within 30 days, with a comprehensive report to follow.

Regarding the rarity of such incidents, Gradek expressed his concerns over the three-hour delay in evacuating passengers from the grassy area where the plane had landed. He emphasized the importance of promptly following safety instructions given by flight attendants and ensuring passengers’ swift evacuation in similar situations to mitigate potential risks.
