The aviation community mourns the loss of a skilled pilot who tragically lost his life in a plane crash during a wildfire operation in the Northwest Territories. Robert MacLeod, a seasoned pilot with over 25 years of experience, was known for his exceptional expertise and composure in high-pressure situations.
Buffalo Airways, the company MacLeod worked for, pays tribute to his valuable contributions to aerial firefighting nationwide. MacLeod served as a bird dog captain for three seasons, collaborating with wildfire agencies in the territories and provinces. Prior to this role, he flew as a bird dog and waterbomber pilot in New Brunswick.
Described as a medevac captain and a revered flight instructor, MacLeod was recognized for his patience, mentorship, and reliability as a team member. His colleagues remember him as a supportive and skilled professional.
Tragically, MacLeod, along with two firefighters, was aboard a Turbo Commander 690 aircraft that crashed near Fort Simpson, N.W.T., on June 24, as they were providing crucial support to a water bomber during firefighting operations.
