John Tory Jr. has decided to step back from the race to become the Liberal nominee in Beaches–East York, citing the fast-paced nomination process and the overwhelming support for other candidates as factors that make his success unlikely.
Tory Jr.’s announcement comes amid increasing competition in the nomination race for the east-end riding, which is gearing up for a federal by-election this summer following the resignation of MP Nathaniel Erskine-Smith. Erskine-Smith left his position as the Liberal MP for Beaches–East York in June to explore opportunities outside federal politics.
In a statement issued on Monday, Tory Jr. explained that the expedited nomination timeline and the groundwork laid by his fellow candidates influenced his decision to withdraw.
“The constrained schedule of this campaign, coupled with the substantial backing garnered by the other candidates through their years of dedication, do not present a feasible or promising path to victory for me,” he stated.
Tory emphasized the importance of uniting support behind the eventual nominee for the benefit of both the party and the Beaches–East York community.
“The optimal outcome for our party, for my family, and for Beaches–East York is for me to concentrate all my efforts on ensuring a Liberal MP is elected in the upcoming by-election this summer,” he asserted.
He assured his full backing for the nominee who emerges victorious and expressed his commitment to assisting the candidate in joining Mark Carney’s Liberal team in Ottawa. Tory extended his gratitude to his family, campaign team, and the residents he engaged with during the nomination process, describing the experience as “humbling and uplifting.”
“I still have the drive and determination within me,” he affirmed. “I am now redirecting my focus towards ensuring the election of our chosen candidate as the Liberal Member of Parliament for Beaches–East York.”
Tory Jr., the son of former Toronto mayor John Tory, who resigned in 2023 following revelations of a relationship with a former staff member, made it clear that he remains dedicated to the party’s cause.
The Liberal Party is anticipated to name its nominee in the following days, with the federal by-election in Beaches–East York slated for later this summer.
