Beware of Scam Letters Impersonating RCMP in West Shore
Residents in West Shore have been targeted by a deceptive letter scam, prompting a cautionary alert from the RCMP.
The fraudulent letters, claiming to be from the RCMP, are circulating in the area and are designed to intimidate recipients into paying fines to avoid supposed criminal charges.
These letters, supposedly originating from the RCMP’s National Cybercrime Coordination Centre (NC3), falsely accuse individuals of criminal offenses related to child exploitation material. They threaten recipients with criminal prosecution and public exposure of their names if the fines are not paid within 24 hours.
The RCMP emphasizes that this is not how Canadian law enforcement conducts criminal investigations and confirms that the letters are not legitimate.
Cpl. Nancy Saggar, Media Relations Officer at West Shore RCMP, warned, “The scammers behind these letters are preying on fear and urgency to coerce victims into meeting their demands.”
If you happen to receive one of these scam letters, it is crucial to resist the urge to respond, send money, or disclose any personal or financial details.
