Businesses in the vicinity of the Broadway Subway Project are facing ongoing challenges as construction activities impact traffic and accessibility.
Although East Broadway has reopened to four lanes from Main Street to Quebec, a new long-term closure is on the horizon just a few blocks away. Starting July 20, West Broadway will be shut down to vehicles between Cambie Street and Alberta for approximately six months. This closure is necessary for repaving and removing the traffic deck to finalize the construction of the Millennium Line section of the Broadway City Hall Station.
Sushi California, like many other businesses in the area, has been significantly affected by the disruptions caused by the project. The restaurant has experienced a substantial 60% decline in profits since the commencement of construction.
Owner Minho Lee expressed concerns about the impact on customers, emphasizing the challenges posed by limited parking availability. With traffic being redirected via 8th Avenue between Alberta and Ash streets, navigating the area during construction will become even more challenging for patrons.
While businesses such as Broadway Locksmith will remain operational throughout the construction period, the lack of nearby parking poses a significant challenge for customer access.
Furthermore, transit users should be prepared for disruptions starting July 16, as bus routes near the Broadway City Hall station will be temporarily altered. Services on the 99, 9, and N9 lines will be rerouted for the next six months.
