The Quebec government has approved the modernization of Olympic Stadium’s interiors alongside the ongoing roof replacement work.
The renovation initiative will involve refurbishing the bleachers, enhancing dressing rooms, introducing luxury boxes, and updating washrooms and concession areas. Completion of the project is scheduled for 2028, with costs yet to be disclosed.
Tourism Minister Amélie Dionne is set to unveil project specifics this Friday, marking the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Olympic Games’ opening ceremony.
In 2024, plans were announced to replace the stadium’s unstable and hazardous roof at a cost of $870 million, emphasizing the cost efficiency of this approach compared to demolition, which was estimated at $2 billion. The roof replacement project is currently in progress and is slated for completion by 2028.
As Montreal commemorates the 1976 games’ anniversary, discussions have arisen regarding the city’s potential to host major events and the funding of infrastructure developments by taxpayers.
Despite differing opinions, the government’s decision to revamp the 56,000-capacity stadium has been positively received by the tourism sector and business community.
Yves Lalumière, president and CEO of Tourisme Montréal, emphasized the positive impact of infrastructure investment on attracting major events, citing the economic and tourism advantages such initiatives bring.
Tourisme Montréal highlighted the $282 million economic boost generated by Taylor Swift’s Toronto concerts in 2024, underscoring the significant contributions of out-of-town visitors to such events.
Jean-Denis Charest, president and CEO of the Chambre de commerce de l’Est de Montréal (CCEM), praised the long-overdue renovation of the stadium for providing stability to partners looking to expand their ventures around the facility.
CCEM estimates that the stadium renovation will stimulate investments in real estate, transportation infrastructure, and local businesses, fostering job creation and delivering approximately $1.5 billion in economic benefits to the region over the next decade.
