An incident involving a Surrey Police Service vehicle and a civilian vehicle led to a pedestrian sustaining serious injuries, prompting the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) in British Columbia to launch an investigation.
The collision took place early Monday morning when a black Chevrolet Avalanche pickup truck collided with the SPS vehicle near the intersection of 96 Avenue and King George Boulevard. Reports indicate that the pickup truck driver failed to stop for officers, leading to a subsequent crash with a SkyTrain guideway support structure, resulting in injuries to the driver.
During the series of events, a pedestrian was struck as a consequence of the collision between the SPS vehicle and the pickup truck, sustaining life-threatening injuries and being rushed to the hospital. The pickup truck driver, too, was taken to the hospital with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Emergency responders, including Surrey Police Service officers, Surrey Fire Service crews, and BC Emergency Health Services paramedics, swiftly reacted to the scene. Following the incident, Surrey Police Service promptly informed the IIO, which has now taken over the investigation.
The IIO’s role is to investigate incidents involving law enforcement in British Columbia that cause serious harm or fatalities, regardless of any police misconduct allegations.
