Montreal on High Alert: Dual Assault of Ferocious Storms and Encroaching Wildfire Smoke

Get Ready for a Stormy Saturday in Montreal

Residents in Montreal are advised to brace themselves for a challenging Saturday ahead. Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Watch and a Special Air Quality Statement for the area. This warning indicates the possibility of severe weather conditions and hazardous smoke from the ongoing wildfires.

Meteorologists are predicting the likelihood of severe thunderstorms forming early in the evening. These storms could bring strong wind gusts of up to 90 km/h and localized heavy rainfall of up to 50 millimetres, increasing the risk of flash floods, fallen tree branches, and isolated power disruptions.

The threat of the storm is anticipated to peak in the early evening before gradually improving overnight. Boaters are cautioned about the potential dangers of sudden, strong wind gusts on lakes and rivers.

Residents are urged by Environment Canada to secure any loose outdoor items and avoid flooded roads. The safety reminder of “When thunder roars, go indoors” emphasizes the importance of taking precautions, as lightning remains a significant weather hazard in Canada.

Better Weather Ahead

As the night progresses, the stormy conditions are expected to ease as winds shift to the northwest. This change in wind direction will help clear both the storms and much of the lingering smoke from the wildfires.

Sunday is forecasted to bring clearing skies with a high of 24°C (humidex 25), accompanied by persistent breezy northwest winds gusting up to 40 km/h. Monday is expected to have sunny and pleasant weather with a high near 26°C.

Rain chances return by Tuesday with a 60 per cent chance of showers, followed by a wetter pattern on Wednesday. However, sunshine and warmer temperatures are predicted to make a comeback later in the week. Friday is expected to have a mix of sun and clouds with a high of 28°C.
