Toronto Tempo’s head coach, Sandy Brondello, has faced suspension following a hot mic incident where she made an inappropriate remark about Atlanta Dream’s star player, Angel Reese.
During a game, Brondello was overheard saying, “Angel, she’s a protected species,” to referees in reference to an on-court incident involving Tempo center Nyara Sabally.
Reese responded by using a clown emoji in a social media post, indirectly addressing Brondello’s comment.
The following day, Brondello publicly apologized for her words, acknowledging the impact they had, especially on Black women in the league. She expressed regret and offered a sincere apology to Reese, her team, and the Dream organization.
The incident occurred when Sabally suffered an injury after a collision with Reese during the game, leading to her leaving the court with assistance.
In response to the incident, the WNBA announced Brondello’s suspension without pay for one game, emphasizing the league’s commitment to professionalism and respect.
Brondello will serve her suspension during the Tempo’s upcoming game against the Las Vegas Aces.
