Enbridge Inc. has commenced construction on a significant $4-billion expansion project for a natural gas pipeline in British Columbia. This expansion, known as the Sunrise Expansion Program, received approval from the federal government in April. The primary goal of this project is to increase the transportation capacity of the province’s natural gas transmission system by an additional 300 million cubic feet per day.
To support this endeavor, the Sunrise project is utilizing high-quality Canadian steel, specifically sourced from InterPro Pipe and Steel in Saskatchewan. By incorporating Canadian materials, the project emphasizes local sourcing and production.
The federal government has emphasized that the Sunrise expansion will play a crucial role in ensuring a steady supply of natural gas for both local consumption and for export to liquefied natural gas facilities on the West Coast. Enbridge, a key player in this initiative, also holds a 30 percent ownership stake in the ongoing construction of the Woodfibre LNG export terminal in Squamish, B.C.
Enbridge’s expansion plan involves adding approximately 140 kilometers of new pipeline to the existing 2,900-kilometer Westcoast Pipeline. This will include the construction of 11 looping segments alongside the current pipeline, as well as enhancements in compression and other infrastructure upgrades to increase throughput.
Notably, an alliance comprising 28 Indigenous communities in British Columbia acquired a 12.5 percent stake in the existing Westcoast pipeline last year. Enbridge clarified that while these groups are not required to invest in the expansion, they have the opportunity to do so voluntarily.
