Ricochet, a shelter on Montreal’s West Island, has secured ownership of its new building on Gouin Boulevard West in Pierrefonds, marking a significant achievement. The organization expressed relief, stating that this move brings an end to years of uncertainty for vulnerable individuals.
Tania Charron, the executive director of Ricochet, emphasized the importance of this milestone, highlighting that owning the building provides a sense of permanence and stability in addressing urgent community needs. She stated, “Being owners isn’t just about a physical structure; it’s about ensuring a lasting presence in areas where support is crucial. This ownership eliminates the risk of eviction, ensuring uninterrupted assistance to those in need.”
Previously, Ricochet faced challenges when forced to vacate its former location following the expiration of its lease in May 2024. Subsequently, around 50 clients were displaced. However, after a brief closure, the shelter relocated and reopened its doors, preventing potential homelessness for 80 individuals.
Looking ahead, Ricochet plans to renovate the currently unused second floor of the building to accommodate 60 new affordable housing units, reducing the number of emergency beds from 80 to 48. Charron emphasized that this initiative aims to break the cycle of perpetual crisis by offering a more sustainable solution to the housing shortage.
