Firefighters in British Columbia are currently battling an out-of-control wildfire near Kimberley, a city in the southeast corner of the province. Residents of Kimberley, a community of over 8,000 people, have been advised to prepare for a possible evacuation as containment lines are being constructed to protect the city.
The BC Wildfire Service is employing heavy equipment to create these containment lines, aiming to halt the fire’s progression located approximately 10 kilometers west of Kimberley. The rugged terrain surrounding the fire has made direct firefighting efforts challenging, causing the blaze to expand to about six square kilometers since its detection on Saturday.
This wildfire is one of around 35 burning uncontrollably across British Columbia, contributing to a total of approximately 100 active fires as of recent reports. In another area, an evacuation order has been issued by the Thompson-Nicola Regional District for select properties in Downing Provincial Park, including the campground.
As temperatures rise and conditions continue to dry out, the BC Wildfire Service has warned of an increased risk of new wildfires sparking in the region.
