“Amid Investigation, Toronto Committee Greenlights Developer’s Variance Request”

Residents in a York neighborhood are up in arms following the approval of variances by Toronto’s Committee of Adjustment for a construction company accused of unauthorized tree cutting.

The developer, Modcity, is currently under scrutiny with nine ongoing investigations, one involving the alleged felling of a tree on a property they did not own at the time. Despite these controversies, the Committee of Adjustment greenlit variances for a multiplex and garden suite to be constructed in place of the now-removed trees.

Local resident Stephanie Pacheco expressed frustration, pointing out the suspicious timeline of events. She criticized the committee for seemingly ignoring the blatant actions of the developer.

While the lawyer representing Modcity emphasized that tree cutting was not a criterion for evaluation, some committee members disagreed, calling for a deferral citing the relevance of the ongoing investigations. However, the variances were ultimately approved, leading to disappointment and exhaustion among residents present at the meeting.
