Montreal’s transit authority (ARTM) has launched a study to explore the development public transit expansion in eight new areas in Greater Montreal.
In a statement, ARTM said the studies will be conducted over the next few years to assess the current and future transit needs and make project recommendations to the Quebec government.
The first region being studied Chomedey–Saint-Laurent area and the results are expected to be released in the fall.

“To meet the needs of the coming decades, we must start thinking now about the steps that will follow,” Benoit Gendron, executive director of the ARTM. “Study areas allow us to better understand the realities of each territory and identify the most promising initiatives for the future,” he added.

The announcement comes on the heels of launch of new REM branches in the recent months and the kick off of the metro’s Blue line expansion in the Greater Montreal region. The City of Montreal have repeatedly called for more investments by the provincial and federal governments in public transit especially as the STM has struggled with budget deficit and an aging infrastructure.
“We must be ready when the financial climate becomes more favourable because, despite current challenges, mobility needs will continue to grow,” Gendron said. “We must continue planning, define priorities, and ensure that tomorrow’s projects meet the real needs of residents and communities.”
