The Quebec Bureau of Independent Investigations (BEI) has launched a probe into the arrest of Philippe Benoit, who stands accused of the deliberate killing of his 16-year-old son in Shawinigan.
According to initial reports from the BEI, a person sustained gunshot wounds during the police operation conducted by the Sûreté du Québec that led to Benoit’s apprehension in Lac-aux-Sables, located in the Mauricie region. Authorities disclosed that the suspect put up resistance during the arrest and was subsequently transported to a medical facility.
A team of six BEI investigators has been assigned to delve into the details surrounding the incident.
In a related development, the 41-year-old had been on the run for four days before being apprehended, following allegations linking him to the death of his son, Ryan Deschenaux. Law enforcement officials claim that the teenager was fatally injured on Sunday at his grandmother’s residence on 201st Avenue in Shawinigan. The arrest warrant specifies that the victim succumbed to injuries sustained from a blunt object.
The BEI’s mandate includes examining cases where police involvement results in severe injuries, death, or the use of firearms.
