A man convicted of fatally shooting Toronto police Constable Michael Sweet in 1980, who was released on day parole in 2024, has been arrested in Victoria, British Columbia.
Craig Munro was apprehended by Victoria police on July 28, and his parole has been revoked by the Parole Board of Canada. The specific reason for Munro’s arrest has not been disclosed by authorities.
The tragic incident occurred when Munro shot Constable Sweet during a tavern robbery on March 14, 1980. Despite negotiations for surrender with the police, Munro refused medical assistance for the injured officer, who ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
After being granted unescorted temporary absences in 2010 and day parole in 2024, Munro’s arrest has sparked renewed demands for changes to the parole system from Sweet’s family.
Nicole, Sweet’s daughter, his widow, and other family members had previously campaigned to keep Munro incarcerated in 2010, arguing against his claims of rehabilitation and right to freedom.
Nicole expressed her distress, stating, “My dad was a man of integrity, and he would be devastated to see his family repeatedly confronted by the presence of Craig Munro.”
