Two sisters, originally from Romania, immigrated to Quebec as children and have now become successful cancer surgeons at Montreal’s McGill University Health Centre. Dr. Sinziana Dumitra, a surgical oncologist, and Dr. Teodora Dumitra, a director in general surgery, share a remarkable journey marked by perseverance, family support, and a deep commitment to patient care.
Both sisters moved to Quebec with their engineer parents in 1994, where they were inspired to pursue careers in medicine. Sinziana was influenced by her aunts’ illnesses and the positive impact doctors had on their lives, while Teodora initially aspired to be a ballerina before turning her focus to orthopedic surgery.
After completing medical school in Montreal and specialized training in Los Angeles, the sisters returned to Montreal to work together at the MUHC. Despite initial challenges, their collaborative approach has led to enhanced patient care, with both sisters valuing the fairness and equity of medical practice in Canada.
The Dumitra sisters emphasize the importance of their shared experiences and perspectives in providing comprehensive care to their patients. Their close bond and mutual respect create a supportive environment that benefits both their professional partnership and the individuals they treat.
