Over 100 skilled wildfire responders from Mexico have arrived in British Columbia to aid in the ongoing battle against more than 100 active wildfires raging across the province.
Minister of Forests Ravi Parmar extended a warm welcome to the new arrivals at Abbotsford International Airport. These firefighters are part of a group of around 300 personnel expected from Mexico this week.
Expressing gratitude for the support, Parmar stated, “In our time of need, I am delighted to welcome over 100 dedicated wildfire personnel from Mexico, with a further 200 scheduled to join later this week. Their selfless commitment to helping protect our communities during this challenging wildfire season is truly commendable.”
The arrival coincides with the evacuation of over 5,000 individuals from their homes in various parts of B.C. due to the escalating wildfire threat. Officials attribute the intensity of the fires to the prevailing hot, dry conditions and unfavorable weather in multiple regions of the province.
Minister Parmar stressed the significance of collaborative efforts in responding to wildfires, highlighting the crucial role played by support from other regions in ensuring the availability of necessary resources where they are most needed.
“Effective wildfire response is a team effort,” he emphasized. “Whether assistance comes from within B.C., across Canada, or globally, each individual who joins the cause enhances our response capabilities, guaranteeing that resources are mobilized promptly to the areas of greatest urgency.”
The Mexican firefighters will swiftly integrate into operations led by the BC Wildfire Service and will be dispatched to the most critical areas across the province.
“I take pride in the cooperation between our Canadian and Mexican wildland firefighters, who prioritize aiding communities without regard to borders when the need arises,” Parmar acknowledged.
The reinforcement provided by these additional crews is expected to strengthen firefighting capabilities as British Columbia confronts the challenges of a demanding wildfire season.
