The leader of the Okanagan Indian Band revealed that a fierce wildfire near Vernon, B.C., has ravaged approximately 230 homes.
Dan Wilson shared that the fire, known as the Bradley Creek fire, has devastated the residences of 30 band members and 200 non-band households. Reflecting on an aerial survey of the destruction, Wilson likened the reserve to a war-torn zone, with the landscape drastically altered.
In a poignant news conference held on Tuesday, Wilson expressed the profound impact of the wildfire, labeling it as one of the most catastrophic events in the band’s history. He described the experience as surreal, emphasizing the overwhelming sense of loss and devastation gripping the community.
The Bradley Creek fire, which ignited late Friday and was exacerbated by strong winds exceeding 115 kilometers per hour, spread rapidly, leaving little time for evacuation. Wilson emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting that some members had only minutes to flee from the encroaching flames.
