“Smoke Alert: Metro Vancouver Chokes as Wildfires Worsen Air Quality”

The Metro Vancouver Regional District (MVRD) has issued an air quality warning for various areas affected by wildfire smoke originating from the South Cariboo, Southern Interior, and the Boston Bar wildfire complex.

This yellow warning, indicating a high health risk, is impacting communities across the region, according to the district. The Fraser Valley continues to be under the warning issued on Tuesday.

The increased presence of fine particulate matter in the air caused by the ongoing blazes is contributing to the heightened risk.

The MVRD explained, “Smoke from wildfires was carried over a large portion of the region due to southerly winds, with concentrations reaching the ground overnight. Winds blowing out of the area are carrying even more dense smoke towards the eastern Fraser Valley.”

Better air quality is expected in southwest Metro Vancouver and coastal areas, while widespread smoke is anticipated to persist until a potential improvement tomorrow when stronger winds from the sea might clear the air.

Residents are advised to reduce outdoor activities to minimize exposure.

The air quality warning covers Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster, the North Shore, Richmond, Delta, Tsawwassen, the Tri-Cities, Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge, Surrey, Langley, White Rock, and the Fraser Valley, including Abbotsford and Mission.
