Residents of Boston Bar can now return home after being evacuated for three weeks due to wildfires. The Fraser Valley Regional District lifted evacuation orders on Wednesday, though residents are advised to remain on alert for possible future evacuations.
In contrast, 1,500 individuals are still under evacuation orders near Pear Lake Fire, the largest wildfire in the region, which has consumed nearly 1,300 square kilometres. A pilot had to make a water landing near 70 Mile House while assisting in firefighting efforts, resulting in hospitalization.
The wildfire outside Clinton has destroyed approximately 120 properties, with a similar situation near the Okanagan Indian Band reserve where the Bradley Creek wildfire burned over 200 properties. One resident, Amber Cardenas, lost her family home of 12 years in the blaze.
Cardenas described her home as a place filled with love and cherished memories, expressing the devastating loss of family heirlooms and sentimental items. Like many others, she found out about the fate of her property through friends and family.
In an effort to rebuild, Cardenas’ family initiated a GoFundMe campaign, which has already raised over $14,000 by Wednesday night. The road to recovery will be challenging, but Cardenas remains grateful for the support and solidarity shown by loved ones.
