A 72-year-old woman was severely injured in a recent encounter with a grizzly bear in a secluded region of British Columbia’s Interior.
The incident occurred on a Sunday near Gold Bridge, located approximately 50 kilometers northwest of Lillooet, according to the Conservation Officer Service.
Authorities believe the attack was provoked by a female grizzly protecting her cub. Responding swiftly, the service dispatched a team equipped to handle predator encounters, including an emergency room doctor, via helicopter. The injured woman was swiftly airlifted to Vancouver General Hospital for medical treatment.
Following the incident, Conservation officers revisited the site the next day to conduct a thorough investigation and collect the victim’s belongings.
Although no bears were harmed or relocated in response to the incident, cautionary signs have been posted in the vicinity as a safety measure. The Conservation Officer Service advises hikers to communicate their travel plans with others and adhere to wildlife safety protocols, including being knowledgeable about appropriate actions during wildlife encounters.
