Toronto authorities have apprehended two individuals, one of whom is a 15-year-old boy, in connection with a shooting outside the United States Consulate in late July.
The incident took place in the early hours of July 27, prompting a swift response from Toronto police after reports of gunfire near the U.S. Consulate on University Avenue. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, although security personnel were present inside the building at the time of the shooting.
Following the incident, a white Honda Accord without license plates was observed fleeing the scene. Subsequent police pursuit led to the recovery of the vehicle in Scarborough after reaching dangerous speeds of over 140 km/hr.
Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw announced the arrest of 19-year-old Xen-Ul-Abdeen Syed on August 1 and the apprehension of the 15-year-old suspect on a later date. Both individuals are facing a total of 22 criminal charges, including non-compliance with a release order.
Demkiw emphasized that the suspects pose a significant threat to public safety, linking their actions to a pattern of criminal activity hired by external parties. This recent shooting incident echoes a previous occurrence on March 10, involving suspects firing at the Consulate’s entrance and triggering a national security investigation.
Law enforcement officials highlighted the use of encrypted messaging apps by criminals to coordinate such acts, emphasizing the need for enhanced investigative tools and deterrence measures. The investigation has expanded to uncover alleged connections to coordinated criminal activities across the Greater Toronto Area.
The suspects involved in the July shooting were also implicated in a separate incident in Scarborough on July 24, where they allegedly set a vehicle on fire after stealing gasoline from a gas station in Caledon.
As the investigation progresses, authorities are focused on uncovering the motives and individuals behind these orchestrated crimes, particularly those exploiting technology to recruit and coordinate criminal activities.
