Erick Thompson, managing the emergency operations center for the Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen, reported that the fire, initially detected at 5:30 p.m., ballooned from 1,000 hectares to a staggering 5,000 hectares within three hours by 10:45 p.m. on Friday.
Thompson emphasized the imminent danger posed by the fast-moving fire, urging residents within the evacuation zone stretching from Summerland north to Peachland to evacuate immediately. He described the fire as one of the swiftest and most aggressive wildfires ever witnessed in the region.
