A dramatic incident unfolded in Calgary on Monday morning when a police officer was shot during a routine traffic stop, leading to a high-speed chase through a bustling city park. The suspect, involved in the dangerous encounter, was later discovered deceased.
According to Calgary police, the event commenced with officers halting a vehicle in the southwest neighborhood of Spruce Cliff at approximately 11:45 a.m. Shockingly, gunfire erupted from inside the vehicle, injuring one officer. The suspect then fled from the scene into the nearby Edworthy Park, continuing to fire shots at officers and bystanders as he fled.
In a daring move, the suspect reportedly commandeered a vehicle within the park, briefly drove before getting stuck, and then fled on foot once more. Thanks to the aerial assistance of the HAWCS helicopter, the suspect was swiftly located and subsequently found deceased in the Bow River before authorities could apprehend him.
The wounded police officer has been transported to a medical facility and is currently in stable condition, with no other injuries reported. Following an initial “dangerous person alert” issued around noon, authorities later confirmed the conclusion of the alert and the termination of the threat by 12:45 p.m.
The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has assumed control of the investigation, as it typically does in cases involving police interactions resulting in significant harm or loss of life. Several entrances to the park remain sealed off, and the public is advised to avoid the area. Eyewitnesses with pertinent information are urged to contact the non-emergency line for assistance.
Road closures persist along Bow Trail SW and Sarcee Trail SW, prompting motorists to seek alternative routes and steer clear of the affected area.
